South Middlesex Opportunity Council, Inc.(SMOC) is a private, nonprofit agency with administrative offices located in downtown Framingham. SMOC’s mission is threefold: 1)To organize, represent and advocate for low-income people in order to attack and eradicate the causes of poverty; 2)To provide direct services to low-income people designed to improve their quality of life and; 3)To foster community development through housing and economic development programs. Central to our mission is working with individuals and households to maximize self-sufficiency and increase economic independence, especially for the most vulnerable in our society including those experiencing homelessness.

Description:
The South Middlesex Opportunity Council was organized in 1965 as part of the nation’s “War on Poverty.” SMOC administers more than 60 programs serving over 30,000 residents annually. Our main service areas are the MetroWest and Blackstone Valley regions but our presence permiates throughout the Commonwealth. SMOC is federally designated to serve 10 communities in the MetroWest including Ashland, Bellingham, Framingham, Holliston, Hopkinton, Marlboro, Natick, Northbridge, Southboro and Wayland. The agency’s programs also serve more than 40 other towns in Middlesex and Norfolk Counties.

SMOC fulfills its mission through a Service Delivery System providing a wide variety of programs targeted to low income households including shelter and housing programs, mental health and substance abuse services, child care and preschool education, adult education, employment and skills training, community services, nutrition, crisis intervention, energy and financial assistance and a vast transitional housing system.

SMOC is the designated anti-poverty organization in the region and a primary provider of housing and services in the MetroWest to homeless families and individuals. SMOC is committed to moving this population towards economic independence and sustained self-sufficiency.
