How you as a hospice volunteer can help

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 26, 2009

Hospice volunteering can be a challenge for most people. It is not easy to accept another human being's end-of-life, as it may propel us to examine our own mortality. Our patients that are in this phase of their life are FULLY alive, and take the opportunity to share their life, their wisdom and their presence with those that will just take the time.

Death is a part of our life. And nobody experiences this more than our volunteers who sit with patients or provide support for the caregiver. Some our novice volunteers remark that the patient they are assigned is not dying, as they originally feared, but are alive and vibrant. As end-of-life caregivers, we take back much more than we ever give. We also have volunteers who work in an indirect capacity and even though they chose not to sit at the beside, they support the organization in other ways with office work, helping with fund raising, offering to sit on our board or educating the public about hospice care. With the indirect care, this type of volunteer work frees others to provide the direct care to the patient and encourages the staff that they have the community's support.

The minimum age requirement is sixteen (16), and there is not maximum. We feel it is best if you wait at least six (6) months after a death or loss in your life.
We do an extensive background check and you must complete an application and an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.
The volunteer training must be completed before you can offer any of your volunteer services. This training covers end-of-life care for our patients, but also explores your own thoughts and feelings about death and dying.
