United Way of Mid Coast Maine has partnered with organizations throughout Lincoln and Sagadahoc Counties, as well as Brunswick and Harpswell, to form the Food Security Coalition. The coalition is working to increase the capacity of Food Pantries to meet the growing demand for food by generating more food donations, volunteers, and funding.
The Food Security Coalition is helping to build on the success of the annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by providing increased public education about the event and the increasing need within our communities. People are encouraged to put bagged or boxed non perishable foods out where letter carriers can collect the items as they follow their postal routes on May 10th. To help support the letter carriers, volunteers will accompany them to collect, sort and deliver the food to the local food pantries.
During the week preceding the Food Drive, local supermarkets will be distributing a “Shopping List” of the 12 items most needed by food pantries.
Items on the “Shopping List” are:
Canned Baked Beans
Canned Vegetables
Canned Fruits
Canned Tuna Fish
Canned Meat
Soups
Shelf Stable Liquid, boxed milk (Parmalat)
100% Fruit Juice (not Grapefruit Juice)
Cold Cereal
Hot Cereal
Bisquick Type Mix
Peanut Butter
