Animal Care Services
Animal Care Service's mission is to promote responsible pet ownership in the community that we serve with a system of laws, polices and practices that promote the humane treatment of animals and insure public health and safety.
Description:
The role of ACS is that of a municipal animal shelter. It is ACS's responsibility to investigate and respond to animal cruelty, stray animals, abandoned animals and dangerous/vicious animals. Community advocacy and education is a huge focus of our organization as well. We are not a private, non-profit organization. However,we have a very limited budget as part of the city government that is supported by our citizens’ tax dollars. We have a responsibility to all the citizens to use our funds as wisely as we can. Our volunteers are invaluable resources for us to help give the animals in our protection the best care possible. We also have a Donation Fund to which people can donate and specify if they’d like the donation to go towards adoption, foster or other areas.
History:
Originally devoted strictly to rabies control and a part of the Health Department, the explosion of unwanted and unaltered animals in San Antonio has caused the focus to change towards implementing programs for spay/neuter and responsible pet ownership, as well as in finding homes for the animals in our care whenever possible.
