Description:
AFTER SCHOOL KARE (ASK) has operated under the auspices of Urban Ministries since 1984. ASK was created to offer children in San Antonio a safe, secure and enriching environment in which to develop a positive self-image and achieve success in education. The After School Kare program provides families of San Antonio affordable, safe and enriching childcare. ASK requires a full directorship at each of their sites. ASK helps site staff to attain their directorship from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. ASK offers scholarships to economically disadvantaged children and its tuition rates are lower than other such programs in San Antonio.

Since 1977, FAIRWEATHER LODGE (FWL) has been serving homeless men and women who suffer from mental disabilities. Supported housing and employment are the components of the program in which individuals can live independently as productive members of the community.

In May 2004, the agency opened its doors as Urban Ministries to the first housing facility for homeless single mothers with mental illness and their children called FAIRWEATHER FAMILY LODGE. Women present a new challenge in the lifestyle for persons with mental illness, as do their children. We expect numerous supportive challenges with this population who will need to master parenting skills while dealing with their diagnosis. The agency's name was changed to San Antonio Family Endeavors in January 2009.

Family Endeavors has been privileged to co-sponsor its third cottage-apartment complex that provides independent living for persons recovering from mental illness. Viceroy Village Apartments, Regal Village and Monarch Place are model projects in South Texas that offer a “home” to those persons who are able to function independently but have no place to reside.

History:
The San Antonio Family Endeavors, Inc., is a private, non-profit organization which emerged in the late 1960's to address the needs of the inner city through the efforts of several of the city's downtown congregations. Over the past years, Family Endeavors has grown to a large ecumenical effort involving 35 churches of various denominations. The primary focus is to bridge gaps with ethnic or geographic areas of our city, nurturing programs that meet community needs.
