The Institute Of Texan Cultures
The mission of the Institute of Texan Cultures is to engage lifelong learners in the understanding and celebration of Texas cultural heritage.
Description:
The Institute of Texan Cultures is San Antonio's cultural experience museum, dedicated to enhancing the understanding of cultural history and its influence upon the people of Texas. The museum develops exhibits, programs, and special events that encourage acceptance and appreciation of our differences, as well as our common humanity. The museum strives to provide a forum for diversity and a showcase for the dynamics of cultural history.
History:
The ITC building housed the Texas Pavilion for the duration of San Antonio's 1968 Worlds' Fair, called HemisFair. The governor at the time, John Connally, approved the construction of the building with the understanding that once HemisFair was over, the pavilion would become the Institute of Texan Cultures and would remain as a permanent tribute to the people of Texas. The ITC was originally under the auspices of the Texas Legislature, then UT- Austin and finally, the University of Texas at San Antonio, where it remains today.
