Description:
Substance abuse is a community health problem that affects one out of every 4 people. Everyone is affected directly or indirectly through health care services, emotional and financial costs on youth, families and schools. It costs our businesses, city and county institutions, criminal justice and health care facilities billions of dollars each year. Someone you know has a drug or alcohol problem and there are resources available to prevent this devastating disease and its effects. The Council is here to provide support, education, resources and prevention programs for all sectors of the community. Therefore, we enlist the involvement of people and organizations throughout the community to learn about the issues and help us prevent the family, health and economic impact of these diseases on our community. We directly reach over 10,000 youth and families in Bexar County each year. We provde youth prevention services for over 2,000 youth each year which include in-school and after school programs and alternative activities for Project Heart, ages 8-12, and Teen Prevention, ages 13-18. Additionally, the Council provides support for families, information and referrals and alcohol and drug education for people affected by substance abuse. We provide education for minors who are court mandated for tobacco and alcohol prevention education. Each year, we do free presentations, education and alternative activities for about 10,000 youth and adults throughout all sectors of the community. We have a performing arts group (HYPE) of youth ages 13-17 that provide entertainment, leadership and drug prevention education for about 5,000 people. We offer professional training for continuing education, and 12 weeks of alcohol, tobacco and drug education for individuals and family members affected by substance abuse. We sponsor a coalition of over 100 community stakeholders to provide public awareness and activities to prevent underage alcohol, tobacco and other drug use, binge drinking among college students and adults, and initiatives to lower the rate of drunk driving vehicle accidents and fatalities. We provide a clearinghouse of free resource materials and disseminate information to about 65,000 people each year through a 28 county region in south, central Texas.
History:
The San Antonio Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse was organized by a small group of prominent citizens in 1957 to educate the community about the disease of alcoholism and to help alcoholics and their families find help. Fifty-three years later the Council is still working to educate communities about one of its major health problems-- the diseases of alcoholism, drug addiction and mental health issues. We are still working to strengthen families and offer services to schools, individuals, families, community organizations, university students, faith based institutions and others throughout Bexar and 28 surrounding counties.
