Inner City Development
The mission of the organization, working in an impoverished neighborhood, is to lift the dignity of the individual. This is done by providing critical, supportive, basic life services and inspiring persons to participate in the betterment of their neighborhood through volunteerism. All of the programs offered are done so through the efforts of volunteers.
Description:
Inner City Development is a nonprofit, all-volunteer staff and administration (with the exception of one part-time administrative assistant) community based organization that responds to emergency, educational, and recreational needs of the neighborhood on the near west side of San Antonio in the vicinity of the Alazan-Apache Public Housing Project. The average annual income of the families in this neighborhood is below $12,000, and below $9,000 in some areas. The center offers services of an Emergency Food Pantry, Emergency Clothing, a spring basketball program for 3-6 graders, arts and crafts, an extensive summer program that includes a job-training program for teenagers, and an after-school program or other sports activities if sufficient volunteers are available. We also have a small GED class.
History:
Inner City Development was founded in 1968 as a very grass roots organization formed by neighbors and the assistance of a Catholic priest. At this time, it is independent of church, city, state or federal government authority. It is run by a community board of directors and a staff of volunteers.
