San Antonio Food Bank
At the San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB), our "Mission" is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education and advocacy.
Description:
The San Antonio Food Bank (SAFB) is a non-profit organization that serves as a clearing house by receiving and storing truck loads of donated food, produce, and other grocery products. SAFB distributes these items in 16 counties in manageable quantities to over 350 human service agencies that help people in need. All donated items are checked and then sorted by trained volunteers for the safety of the consumers.
History:
The SAFB was founded in 1980. Sister Mary Helen Sullivan of the Catholic Archdioceses' Human Development Office is recognized as the founder of the Food Bank. It is the oldest of Texas' 19 America's Second Harvest Food Banks. The SAFB is also one of the largest food banks in the America's Second Harvest national network of over 200 food banks. In 2006 the SAFB distributed over 32 million pounds of food into the community. In one week, we provide emergency food assistance to 25,000 individuals. In addition to food distribution, the San Antonio Food Bank provides numerous programs that not only solve the immediate problems of hunger, but help individuals and families gain long-term food security.
