The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church.
Its message is based on the Bible.
Its ministry is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
The motivation of the organization is the love of God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity.
This is expressed by a spiritual ministry, the purposes of which are to teach the Gospel,
disseminate Christian truths, supply basic human necessities, provide personal counseling and
undertake the spiritual and moral regeneration and
physical rehabilitation of all persons who come within its sphere of influence regardless of race, creed or color.

Description:
The Salvation Army is a Christian, Bible-based organization whose aim is to meet the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of those individuals who have come to a crisis in life. Our services are offered on an emergency basis and are not usually long term.

Volunteers are needed on a regular basis in most areas of operation. Volunteer jobs include office work (filing, data entry, and mail-outs), child care (reading to the children, tutoring school-age students, assisting teachers in daily activities), food sorting, bagging and distribution, assisting senior citizens with meals, card games and dominoes, as well as crafts and other activities.

History:
The Salvation Army began in London, England in 1865 by William Booth, a Methodist minister. The Army came to the United Sates in 1875 and to San Antonio in 1885.

The Army currently has five campuses, housing 13 programs ranging from two child development centers (2) to two Senior Citizen residences (2). Social Services include small rent and utility assistance, transitional living, a women's & children's emergency shelter, a men's shelter, a drug rehabilitation center, a Boy's & Girl's Club, three churches, and four separate programs for women ages 13 - 65.

Seasonal programs include Christmas Toy & Joy Shop, Adopt-an-Angel, Adopt-A-Family, Stuff-a-Stocking project and Easter baskets for limited programs (approximately 500 children and seniors).
