The Mission of the National Kidney Foundation is to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases, improve the health and well-being of patients and families affected by these diseases, and increase the availability of all organs for transplantation.

Description:
Nationally one in every nine individuals will experience some form of kidney disease in their lifetime. It is estimated that in NKF-SCT’s service area the average is closer to one in every seven! In response to the needs of patients, health care providers and caregivers, and in an effort to prevent continued growth in kidney disease, NKF-SCT provides the following programs and services.

Programs And Services include:

• CAMP REYNAL for children on dialysis or those who have received transplants
• THE SCHOOL ZONE PROGRAM provides presentations to students about kidney health and organ donation.
• KEEP health screening program (Kidney Early Education and Prevention) to identify individuals at risk for kidney disease
• CLERGY TRAINING for local ministers, priests and rabbis about organ donation
• SYMPOSIA professional educational seminars for doctors, nurses and others
• PATIENT SUPPORT through financial assistance to dialysis patients in need. Funds are distributed through social workers and dietitians at dialysis clinics throughout our service area.
• INFORMATIONAL BROCHURES IN ENGLISH/SPANISH provided free of charge
• THE TRANSPLANT GAMES offers transplant recipients the opportunity to compete
• HEALTH FAIRS provide information to pre-dialysis, dialysis and pre-transplant patients
• RESEARCH PROJECTS to impact prevention and treatment of kidney disease


History:
The National Kidney Foundation Serving South and Central Texas is currently the largest division of the National Kidney Foundation in the state of Texas. Our service area now stretches as far north as Temple, east to Corpus Christi, south to Brownsville and west to Del Rio. But by far, our strongest focus is in the local community which we have served for more than 18 years. Founded locally in 1990, NKF-SCT is dedicated to reducing the incidences of kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well being of patients and their families and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.
