Mitchell Lake Audubon Center
The Mitchell Lake Audubon Center mission is to instill a shared appreciation and sense of stewardship for the natural world through hands-on nature education, citizen science and preservation of the Mitchell Lake Wildlife Refuge.
Description:
Audubon is restoring and improving this natural area for wildlife, while providing children, families and teachers opportunities for hands-on nature education. Audubon's programming is specifically designed to focus on underserved populations in urban areas, with an emphasis on outdoor science and citizenship. Educational programming at the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center will address the need for students to improve and strengthen their science skills. Education curricula and programs are aligned with TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) mandated curriculum set by the state. Because of the earth and living science components that the 1200-acre Mitchell Lake Wildlife Refuge has to offer, the primary audience is students in 5th through 8th grades, with a secondary audience of 10th and 11th grades.
History:
Audubon has been connecting people with nature across Texas since 1899. In April 2004, Audubon entered into a partnership with the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) to manage the natural resources of the 1200-acre refuge and offer educational programming. Since opening to the public in October 2004, Audubon has conducted a market analysis, completed native plant landscaping around the Center, graduated three classes of docents, and provided programs and tours for various schools and groups including free nature programs for families and an annual wildlife festival.
