Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives, Inc. is committed to caring for children in crisis. Our promise to the community is that we will give every child and family seeking our services our complete dedication and attention. Based on the principles of respect and responsibility, it is our goal to give children a foundation of positive values, which will promote future success and end the cycle of abuse.
Description:
Youth and families seek services from Youth Alternatives for a variety of reasons: The most common situations include problems with homelessness, abandonment, or the youth has been removed from the home for reasons of abuse and neglect.
RMYA accepts children who have suffered severe abuse, neglect, and/or abandonment. We also work with children on probation, parole, and those who are wards of the state, which means that parental rights have been terminated and the State of Texas is their legal guardian. Many of our children have been exposed to situations where their life and safety is at risk, therefore they have been removed from their homes and placed with us in order to prevent additional abuse. At RMYA, we provide all the basics a child needs such as food and clothing. We send them to school and encourage them to participate in extra curricular activities such as band, sports, cheerleading, etc. We take them to the doctor when they are sick, take them to the dentist for check-ups, fillings, braces, etc. But most importantly, we show them that we love and want the best for each one of them. It may sound simple, but the reality is that getting our kids to understand that they are beautiful and special is probably the toughest job we have.
History:
Roy Maas was our first Executive Director and began operation of the Bridge Emergency Shelter in 1976, as one small program for 16 boys. Roy Maas was Executive Director for 18-1/2 years until he lost his battle with cancer on October 30, 1994. Because of what we have today, we are indebted to Roy for his vision, force of will, and common sense. In August of 1993 the Board of Directors voted to change the agency name from Youth Alternatives to Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives to honor Roy Maas for his dedication to the children we serve. Today Roy Maas' Youth Alternatives consists of two campuses:
- Our San Antonio campus, which is home to the Bridge Emergency Shelter, TurningPoint Transitional Living Program, the RMYA Thrift Shop and our Counseling Center.
- Our Boerne campus, MeadowLand, which is home for approximately 80 children that live in 6 separate facilities. We offer both basic and residential treatment services. Children live at MeadowLand anywhere from 6 months to 6 years.
