The mission of Habitat for Humanity of Laredo, Webb County is to assist in the elimination of substandard and inadequate housing in our community. Habitat for Humanity of Laredo, Webb Co. works in partnership with God and people who are from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building houses so that there are decent, affordable houses in communities in which people can live and grow.

Description:
Habitat for Humanity of Laredo, Webb County is located in Laredo, Texas along the Mexican border; a straight shot south of San Antonio (about 200 miles). Our affiliate is directed by Carol Sherwood, full-time 100% volunteer executive director who inspires, teaches, and helps lead on the construction site. Our staff consists of three paid employees, 5 Americorps Service Members, one SER Elder Program Volunteer, a dedicated Board of Directors leading the construction, and many regular experience and inexperienced volunteers. The affiliate is unique in that it serves the poorest of the poor (the 25% - 60% median income bracket) yet has never had any home foreclose. Grateful homeowner partners continue to volunteer in building new homes well after their 500 required hours of working along other volunteers. We are an awesome organization, truly making an impact in the community and in the lives of our volunteers because they see the product of their work.

History:
Habitat for Humanity of Laredo is a recognized affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International since April 1995. Our mission to eliminate substandard housing by building simple, decent, and affordable houses for the working poor of the area has led us to exciting and fun opportunities for thousands and thousands of volunteers across the USA. A full history of house construction that started from dedicated individuals in the early 1990's, working out of their garages to our next ambitious project - a COLONIA ALTERNATIVE community of at least 45 houses, is available at request. The colonia alternative community will be called Tierra Prometida (Promised Land) and is situated on 10 acres of donated land along Highway 359, surrounded by identified colonias who will also be served as we begin building. Habitat for Humanity frequently hosts groups from all parts of the country who are wanting to volunteer.
