Volunteer Opportunity Details:

The Benefits Counselor program provides confidential information, counseling and advocacy for seniors citizens, and Medicare beneficiaries of any age, on their public benefits, entitlements, and legal rights. Benefits Counselors also provide public education on a variety of topics impacting seniors. Certified Benefit Counselors consult on topics such as: Medicare, Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, Advance Directives, Long-Term Care, Non-Covered Health, Other Insurance, Veterans Issues, Social Security, Senior Fraud/Scams and Medicare and Medicaid Appeals/Hearings.

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and should be able to work independently. Volunteer need to be sensitive to the needs of the elderly and protect their privacy and confidentiality. Certified Benefits Counselors provide training at the volunteers own pace which consists of 25 hours group and individual classes and 20 hours of shadowing. The volunteer is asked to remain with the agency for at least one (1) year after certification. Continued informational training is provided.
