The Benefits Counseling program provides information, counseling, and advocacy to senior citizens, and Medicare beneficiaries of any age, on their public benefits, entitlements, and legal rights. Benefits Counselors also provide public education on a variety of topics impacting seniors. Certified Benefits Counselors consult on topics such as: Medicare, Medicaid, Social Supplemental Income, Advance Directives, Long-Term Care, Non-Covered Health, Other Insurance, Veterans Issues, Social Security, Senior Fraud/Scams, Medicare and Medicaid Appeals/Hearings. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and should be able to work independently. Volunteer need to be sensitive to the elderly and protect their privacy and confidentiality. Certified Benefits Counselors provide training at the volunteers own pace which consists of 25 hours group and individual classes and 20 hours shadowing. Volunteers are asked to remain with the agency for at least one (1) year after certification. Continued informational training is also provided.
