DUTIES: Operation and maintenance of the 18th century grist mill which includes grinding wheat, regulating the water flow and daily cleaning all parts of the milling mechanisms, interpreting the operation and history of the mill to visitors and selling souvenir bags of flour. COMPENSATION: Orientation of the park, training in interpretation and history of the park and a VIP uniform will be provided. For out-of-town volunteers using an RV, the park has three RV pads with full hook ups; check for availability. Use of RV pad will require a minimum 3-month commitment. AREA: The park is located in the city of San Antonio, a large metropolitan area with many cultural, entertainment and recreational opportunities. Located in south Texas, the summer temperatures reach into the 100s, and the winter temperatures range in the 50s. SKILLS: Must like being outside, enjoy talking to people, like manual labor and have an interest in learning the historic skill of milling wheat. Must be physically capable of lifting at least 25 pounds. The different sounds the mill stones make when grinding tell the operator if it is working properly, therefore volunteers should be able to differentiate sounds.
