Second Harvest Inland Northwest
Fighting hunger, feeding hope: Second Harvest brings community resources together to feed people in need through empowerment, education and partnerships.
Description:
As the hub for charitable food distribution for the Inland Northwest, Second Harvest provided more than 7 million pounds of food for hunger relief in Spokane County this past fiscal year and 15.5 million pounds of food region wide. Most of the food was distributed through more than 300 partner charities operating neighborhood food banks and meal programs, including 150 located within Spokane County. Second Harvest also distributes a wide variety of fresh produce and other perishable foods through the Mobile Food Bank Program. The program makes use of a changing stream of donations that includes more fresh foods that neighborhood food banks have trouble storing to fight hunger in impoverished rural and urban communities. Some of the distributions are linked to schools and centers serving a high percentage children and teens from low-income families. Second Harvest’s Kids Cafe Program provides a mix of fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy and other food, along with nutrition education, to hundreds of children living in the Hillyard and West Central communities.
History:
Since its incorporation in July 1972 as a central warehouse for Spokane food pantries, Second Harvest has grown into a regional distribution site of the Feeding America national food bank network. In nearly four decades of operation, Second Harvest has distributed almost 200 million pounds of food. Our warehouse in Spokane is 85,000 square-feet and includes commercial coolers and freezers. Second Harvest uses community contributions to pay for costs to secure, warehouse and distribute truckloads of food donated by growers, grocers and manufacturers throughout the region and further-reaching parts of the country. We also staff community food drives to gather shelf-stable food that stocks the shelves of Second Harvest’s network of 20 Spokane County food banks. This massive hunger-relief organization is supported by more than 8,000 generous individuals, businesses, service clubs and other organizations. More than 2,000 dedicated volunteers help us stretch every donated dollar into six pounds of food for families and seniors.

Overall Experience

Very Satisfying Experience

Positive experience directly helping folks on need. This was my first volunteer effort. Was a bit surprised that there was no "Thank You" or recognition from the organization at all for my small effort but then I remembered that so many of the people I helped distribute the food to said those words over and over. That is what made the experience so great. posted on September 2, 2005 |

Served as Secretary/Treasurer and on Personnel and Finance Committee. Participated in food drives and client surveys. Helped me understand budget processes better. Developed relationships with staff and other volunteers. All in all, it was a great experience!!! posted by ejubon on January 17, 2005 |
