Muscular Dystrophy Association
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a voluntary national health agency - a dedicated partnership between scientists and concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases that affect more than a million Americans. Locally, MDA is available to serve anyone with one of the neuromuscular diseases in the Association's program.
Description:
MDA is striving to defeat over 40 neuromuscular diseases such as Duchenne, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and ALS (or Lou Gehrig's disease). MDA works in your community to combat neuromuscular diseases through 1) basic and applied scientific investigation, 2) local comprehensive programs of medical services and clinical care, and 3)widespread professional and public health education.
History:
As late as 1950, very little was being done to combat neuromuscular disease. In that year, a small group of parents whose youngsters had muscular dystrophy decided to do something about this, and MDA was born. Those parents firmly believed that there are no incurable diseases, only diseases for which no treatments have yet been found. That basic philosophy has animated MDA ever since.
