The mission of Susan G Komen for the Cure is to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures

Description:
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded on a promise made between two sisters, Susan G. Komen and Nancy Brinker. Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, a time when little was known about the disease and was rarely discussed in public. Before she died at the age of 36, Susan asked her sister to do everything possible to bring an end to breast cancer. Nancy kept her promise by establishing the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982 in Susan’s memory.

Twenty years later, the Komen Foundation is a global leader in the fight against breast cancer through its support of innovative research and community based outreach programs. Working through a network of local Affiliates and three international Affiliates and events such as Race for the Cure®, the Komen Foundation has invested nearly a billion dollars in its efforts to eradicate breast cancer.

History:
On the local level, the Komen Austin Affiliate was established in late 1999 to spread the life-saving message of early detection and to support breast cancer screening and diagnostic programs in Central Texas.

Up to 75 percent of the net income from the Komen Austin Race for the Cure® and other fundraising activities remain in the community to fund breast cancer education and screening programs in Bastrop, Caldwell, Hays, Travis and Williamson counties. Komen Austin places a special emphasis on programs that provide breast cancer education and screening to medically underserved populations.

Komen Austin shares a minimum of 25 percent of our net income to support The Komen Foundation Award and Research Grant Program.

Komen Austin has granted over $3.3 million locally in the fight against breast cancer.

Komen volunteers, donors & supporters get involved year round through Komen events such as the Race for the Cure which is held the 1st Sunday of November. This is the largest 5K race in Austin.
