Citizen Schools At Bedichek & Kealing Middle Schools
Love hands-on lessons? Love teaching creatively? Citizen Schools offers a one-of-a-kind teaching opportunity in underprivileged Austin middle schools.
During weekly, 90-minute classes (called apprenticeships) Citizen Schools volunteers share their talents and interests with a group of middle school students and develop a creative project to be showcased at the end of the ten-week program. Apprenticeships are designed around the talents and passions of our volunteer teachers. Are you interested in computers and technology? Lead students in an apprenticeship that teaches them to design web pages! Love gardening? Work with students to redesign the landscaping at their school or to plan a sustainable food garden. This is a great opportunity to teach high-quality, creative classes and to connect with local Austin communities. Skills Enthusiasm, endurance, love for children and a good sense of humor. Citizen Teachers range from college students to some of Austin’s best professionals, trades people and artisans. Some teach their profession or jobs; others teach their hobby or trade. Days and Times Apprenticeships take place once a week in the afternoon, approximately 4:30-6:00pm, starting in mid-September and ending in early December, or in mid-February and ending in early May. Citizen Schools also offers unique volunteer training and support throughout the semester. Classes begin soon! To register, please contact Kathryn Nash, Texas Volunteer Manager, at (713)529.4006 or kathrynnash@citizenschools.org.

Since 1995 Citizen Schools has built a creative and effective learning model that addresses community needs while building student skills through hands-on experiential learning activities. Citizen Schools operates a National Network of apprenticeship programs for youth that connects middle school students with adult volunteers in hands-on learning. At Citizen Schools, students develop the academic and leadership skills they need to do well in school, get into college, and become leaders in their careers and in their communities. We currently enroll 2,000 middle-school students and engage 1,500 volunteers at 24 school campus sites nationwide.
