Arc Of The Capital Area
Mission
The Arc of the Capital Area, a non-profit organization, is committed to promoting independence and choice by providing individualized services to adults and children with developmental disabilities.
Vision
We envision a future in which people with developmental disabilities and their families have the same opportunities as others to pursue full and productive lives.
Values
Everyone has basic rights, desires and strengths, and is entitled to choices that increase independence and quality of life, valued and recognized, diverse and unique. Everyone has the right to make informed choices regarding where they live, where they work, how they participate in the community and how they interact with others.
Description:
The Arc of the Capital Area is an organization that serves children and adults with developmental disabilities. A developmental disability is any severe or chronic disability that limits a person’s participation in three or more of the following life activities: self-care, learning, capacity for independent living, self-direction, language, mobility, and economic self-sufficiency.
We see the vulnerabilities of our clients and their families every day. Our goal is to provide much needed services to the thousands of people who seek our assistance. We take pride in having been an integral part of the Central Texas community for more than 56 years, and we look forward to continued success with your help. Together, we can make a difference.
History:
The Arc of the Capital Area is a non-profit organization founded in 1949 by parents concerned about the exclusion of their children with mental retardation from public schools. Today, our mission has expanded far beyond its original intent.
Over the years The Arc of the Capital Area has undergone several name changes. Originally, we were known as The Association for Retarded Children and then the Association for Retarded Citizens. We changed our name as we began to serve people with other developmental disabilities in addition to mental retardation. As our services began to touch lives in other towns and cities near Austin, we changed our name to The Arc of the Capital Area. Though our name may have changed several times, our devotion to people with disabilities in the community has been unceasing.
The Arc of the Capital Area provides community education, advocacy, self-advocacy training, professional case management, support groups to families, information and referral on disability issues, one-to-one volunteer matching and programs responding to gaps in the local human services system.
The Arc of the Capital Area has broad community support with local, state and private funding. We have a broad membership of family members, interested area residents and professionals.
