Down Syndrome Association Of Central Texas
The Down Syndrome Association Of Central Texas (DSACT) envisions a world in which all members, including those with Down syndrome, are accepted,
valued for their uniqueness, respected for their abilities and contributions, and assured
the opportunity and choice to create their own path to fulfillment and success.
Our mission is to provide education, support, and resources to individuals with Down syndrome, their families, professionals, and the community, while building public awareness and acceptance of the abilities of individuals with Down syndrome.
Description:
Since 1991, DSACT (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit) has proactively advocated for individuals with Down syndrome in the Central Texas area and their families by disseminating timely and informative materials, sponsoring educational conferences and training seminars, maintaining a comprehensive website on Down syndrome, and supporting a wide network of parents, educators, physicians, congregations, and community members.
We are the families of individuals with Down syndrome and the professionals (doctors, attorneys, therapists, teachers) who support us. We are the people who believe in individuals with Down syndrome, demand their rights, and support them in their daily lives. Most importantly, we are people with Down syndrome who just want to be included and lead happy and fulfilling lives.
We are proud to be affiliated with both national Down syndrome organizations, and work collaboratively with them and other affiliates to break down stereotypes through education and awareness.
History:
Over 20 years ago, a group of Central Texas parents recognized the need for parent to parent support, envisioned better opportunities and services for their children, and created the Down Syndrome support group. In 1991, the Board obtained 501(c)(3) status and formally incorporated the organization as the Down Syndrome Association of Central Texas (DSACT).
Today, DSACT stands tall, not only as the leading voice, authority and advocate for people with Down syndrome in the Central Texas area, but also as a name that stands for growth, integrity and respect.
DSACT is a dynamic, volunteer-driven group. Each year, over 200 volunteers dedicate over 5,000 hours of their time and talent to DSACT, a service which the IRS values at over $90,700.
