Handicapped Equestrian Learning Program, Inc.
H.E.L.P. provides horseback riding lessons for children and adults with disabilities. These lessons are designed to strengthen the rider physically and mentally, as well as being a fun and enjoyable experience for them.
Description:
At HELP, each rider is assisted by an instructor, a horse leader and a person to walk on the right side of the horse to assist the rider with balance and following directions. We try to make each lesson fun for the rider and the volunteers. They are able to experience the joy of riding and the warm bond between horse and rider.
History:
The HELP Center was started over 20 years ago by Peggy Haecker when she watched the difference horses made for her son who was A.D.H.D. She started with her personal horse and her children as volunteers. Since then we have grown to 7 horses and range from 10-15 volunteers from working with the children to volunteering with barn duties. We continue to grow each year and provide services for all types of disabilities such cerebral palsy, learning disabilities, autism, and visual impairments.
