American YouthWorks (EL/Civics Program)
"Building productive lives and better communities." This is the mission statement of our organization and we work to achieve this goal through education and service learning for students in the Austin area. The EL/Civics division of American YouthWorks was established to support learners of English as a second language by providing English language instruction and education about living in Austin.
Description:
The EL/Civics program is dedicated to helping adult students learn English as a second language and learn life skills in order to support students in their endeavor to reach their full potential in the community.
History:
American YouthWorks (AYW) emerged in 1976. AYW (formerly American Institute for Learning) was the first program in Austin to recognize the needs of individuals neglected by our educational system. In the fall of 2007, the EL/Civics program was established as a part of AYW to provide English and life skill classes for adult language learners.
