Project Mentor is a school‐based mentoring program, funded through the US Department of Education, for students in grades four through eight. The goal of the Department of Education funded program is to: 1) assist students in receiving support and guidance from a mentor, 2) improve the academic performance, 3) improve the interpersonal relationships of students with their peers, teachers, other adults, and family members, 4) reduce the school dropout rate, 5) reduce juvenile delinquency and gang participation.

Description:
Project Mentor is a school-based mentoring program funded through a U.S. Department of Education grant, designed to assist students (grades 4 through 8) in receiving support and guidance from a mentor.

Mentors provide friendship, encouragement, and academic support. A mentor helps a child develop his or her strengths and talents by supporting the efforts of other significant adults such as parents and teachers.

Research has shown that youth who receive support and guidance from a caring adult will show measurable improvement in academic achievement, higher levels of school attendance, and a reduction in discipline referrals. Mentored youth are more likely to stay in school and graduate and develop positive interpersonal relationships.

Project Mentor is beginning its third year of existence in Manor Independent School District as of the 2009-2010 school year.
