Description:
The Capital Area Food Bank is a dynamic, community organization working hard to make a difference in the lives of thousands of central Texans. In 2005 we received more than 18 million pounds of donations. CAFB’s collaborative approach and committed partners have been key to our success. Partner Agencies include soup kitchens, church food pantries, neighborhood centers, halfway houses, family crisis shelters, hospice programs and low-income daycare facilities. CAFB’s newest programs include CHOICES, a nutrition education program that teaches individuals and families how to make smart choices at mealtime, and Food Stamp Outreach and Education, which helps clients access food stamps by educating potential recipients and assisting them with the application process. Volunteers play a significant role as partners, helping in all aspects of our organization. CAFB is a great place for individuals and groups to get involved, whether on a regular basis or as a one-time project. We offer a safe and positive work environment. While most opportunities take place at our facility, there are several special events throughout the year that allow volunteers to participate in different ways. If you have helped at the Food Bank, please be sure to share your thoughts in the Reflection section of our listing. Thanks for your support!
History:
The Capital Area Food Bank opened in 198 and is part of a national network of food banks affiliated through America's Second Harvest. Over the years, CAFB has grown and expanded and has moved from various rented locations. In September of 1997, CAFB proudly opened the doors to our current home on South Congress. This facility, owned by the Food Bank, was made possible by the support of many community individuals, foundations, organizations and corporations. The CAFB has twice been awarded National Food Bank of the Year by America's Second Harvest and has also received other special A2H awards including one for our volunteer program.
