Description:
Vision: We will work to build a community of peace and safety for all. We commit ourselves to preventing rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence and breaking the cycle of violence in our society. We will offer a comprehensive and compassionate continuum of services, providing support and resources for survivors to create independent lives, free of violence, for themselves and their families. We will be leaders across our community, the state and nation in building models for preventing and healing from rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence. We will be catalysts for social change, dedicated to peace in our homes and on our streets.
History:
The Center for Battered Women was created in 1977 as the first shelter for battered women and their children in Texas and one of the first in the nation. The Austin Rape Crisis Center began providing the Austin community with comprehensive sexual assault and abuse prevention and intervention services in 1974. In 1985, ARCC was recognized by the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Rape as an exemplary rape crisis center. The merger of these two agencies in 1998 provides a unified voice to women, children and men who have experienced interpersonal violence.
