Mathews Elementary School
The mission of Mathews is to instill a lifelong love of learning - academically, socially, and personally for children from all walks of life.
Description:
Did you know that downtown Austin has a one-of-a-kind, award-winning, nationally recognized, international PUBLIC Elementary School? We are a small campus of 430 students housed in a recorded historic building. Our school is one of the most diverse schools in the state of Texas, with more than 40 different nations represented in our student body speaking over 20 languages. Mathews draws students from the historic Guadalupe neighborhood east of I-35, from downtown Austin, from the Old West Austin neighborhood, from the historic Clarksville neighborhood, and from the UT apartments west of MoPac as well as transfer students from across the city. We offer many volunteer opportunities and are located close to the UT campus and on the shuttle route.
History:
Our school is named in honor of Dr. W. J. Mathews, a local physician and a founding member of the Austin School Board. Mathews has recently celebrated our 90th Anniversary with a special ceremony unveiling a Texas State Historical Marker.
