TOPDD’s mission is to help minimize the human and economic losses caused by preventable developmental disabilities.
Description:
TOPDD's main focuses are the prevention of head and spinal cord injuries and the prevention of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. The agency’s goals are to: •Educate the public and professionals about the causes of and how to prevent developmental disabilities. •Promote sound public policy regarding prevention of developmental disabilities. •Monitor and reduce the incidence of developmental disabilities. •Encourage adoption of promising prevention practices in existing programs. •Expand the system’s capacity to provide competent services to at risk populations.
History:
The Texas Office for Prevention of Developmental Disabilities (TOPDD) was created by the Texas Legislature and Governor in 1989 to coordinate activity among the health and human service enterprise to prevent developmental disabilities.
