To provide services that promote safe and compliant facilities and ensure environmental quality for the university.

To protect the environment on campus, promote environmental awareness and conservation of resources. To educate the campus community about environmental problems and solutions.

Description:
The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) office is located in the Service Building (SER)at 304 E. 24th Street on The University of Texas at Austin campus.

We are responsible for planning, implementing and administering The University's environmental, health and safety program, and for providing supportive technical consultation, training, investigation, and inspection to ensure compliance with guidelines set forth by federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Our primary functions are to assist The University community (students, staff, faculty) in meeting health and safety responsibilities, to prevent or reduce accidents and to identify and eliminate environmental hazards and dangerous conditions. Preservation of the environment includes caretaking Waller Creek, which runs through campus along San Jacinto.

We also serve to educate and train the campus community in environmental and safety awareness.

History:
EHS has been an integral part of the university since the 1970s, when environmental, health and safety regulations began to come into effect. Our office has been in the service building (SER) for more than 10 years. We have been involved in the environmental and safety aspects of construction projects around campus for the past 20 years. We have forged strong bonds with many professors and lab supervisors in relation to hazardous waste disposal and proper chemical handling. Stormwater and pollution prevention are two of our environmental programs. Waller Creek is under our care and we have conducted trash cleanups for the past 5 years.
