History:
The Austin Travis County MHMR Center was established in 1967. Its opening was significant because this was the first time that a public, community based mental health and mental retardation services became available to the residents of Austin and Travis County. The center is neither a state agency nor a county department, but a publicly funded, non-profit organization.
