SHARE WHAT YOU KNOW AND LOVE WITH AUSTIN’S YOUTH!
MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES AND YOURS—
TEACH AN APPRENTICESHIP WITH CITIZEN SCHOOLS!

Citizen Schools works because of the dedicated individuals who volunteer their time to share their skills and knowledge with small groups of children at Citizen Schools sites. At Citizen Schools we make sharing what you know and love with kids easy! In our 12-week volunteer-led Apprenticeships, we use a team-based approach, provide volunteers with extensive training, and offer coaching once volunteers begin to work with our students.
The time commitment is 90 minutes per week for 12 consecutive weeks in fall or spring. Our academic year program in the fall begins in mid-September and culminates in mid-December. Our spring program begins in late February and culminates during the second week in May.
Citizen Teachers range from college students to some of Austin’s best professionals, trades people and artisans. Some teach their profession or jobs; others teach their hobby or trade. We are especially looking for folks to teach culinary arts, website design, video game design, quilting, dance, and fine arts.

Last fall, five volunteers from Bank of America in Boston taught the Taking Care of Business apprenticeship. Volunteer Andre Monestime commented:
"One young man, Leroy Powell, just wowed me last week. He is one of our youngest students and will be the lead hitter at the WOW! presentation. Last week, he went through the concept of revenues and costs, and the formula that leads to a business's profit margin. I was giving him real numbers to process as part of explaining the formula. He answered with no hesitancy and great poise -- explaining it all and working the numbers. He made me so proud -- I feel like a dad feels about his son or a big brother feels when he sees his little brother shine."

All Citizen Teachers attend at CT Training before the apprenticeship semester begins. These trainings cover effective strategies for engaging middle school students, how to support students in producing WOW!-quality results, and give you an introduction to the Citizen Schools staff and our culture.

For your convenience, we offer this training on both weeknights and weekends to try to fit with every CT’s schedule. The training for the spring semester will be held on Tuesday, February 6th from 6:30-9, Wednesday, February 7th from 6:30-9, and Saturday, February 10th from 9:30-12. All trainings take place at Bedichek Middle School on S. 1st at William Cannon. Please let me know which training you (or the individual teaching the course) would prefer to attend.
