Veterinarian Spay/Neuter Clinic Surgical Recovery Support Staff

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on June 22, 2009

This opportunity allows volunteers to gain hands-on experience with the Animal Trustees of Austin surgical patients. It is a very intimate and crucial position where volunteers are paired up with animals one-on-one to provide post-op care and to be sure animals are safely recovering from their anesthesia.
*Assist with pre-surgery check-in of patients, including collection of patient medical history and patient weight and vital signs.
*Assist staff in post-operative recovery and monitoring.
*Relaying post-operative instructions to pet owners when picking up their animals after surgery in the afternoon. (This activity is from 3-6pm.)
*Assist in answering pet healthcare questions with the help of trained clinic staff.
*Sterilize medical instruments, prepare surgical packs and assist with laundry used during surgical procedures.

This is an excellent opportunity to get hands-on veterinary care experience. This position is open to any volunteer, but would be especially fitting for pre-veterinarian students or those interested in learning more about animal medical care. Volunteers must be 17 years of age. We are unable to accommodate individuals seeking to fulfill court-ordered community service hours. It is preferred that volunteers wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing. No uniform or special attire is required.

Contact volunteer coordinator to schedule a 30 minute tour of the Animal Trustees of Austin clinic facility, then a 2 hour training session on specific duties to be carried out during volunteer shift will be scheduled. Hours: 7:30am-12:00pm, Monday-Saturday, 3 hour shifts during this time frame.
