The Friendship Link Program is supported by the Volunteer Department at Austin Travis County Mental Health Mental Retardation. The Friendship Link Program is a friend matching program serving adults living with mental retardation, developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities. Friendship Link volunteers are matched with a new friend for community based leisure and recreational activities. The friends meet one time per week or ever other week for fun filled activities such as bowling, movies, museums, concerts, sports events and more. If the volunteer cannot afford the cost of the activity, but still has reliable transportation and the willingness to help reduce social isolation for the new friend, then I am interested in talking with you. I have a small fund for which to reimburse the cost for the volunteer and the consumer if needed. Volunteers are required to complete an in-person interview with Tommie Calfee, Volunteer Coordinator, Austin Travis County MHMR at which time a criminal background check will be completed and options for orientation will be discussed. All volunteers are required to have safe, reliable transportation and a good driving record and auto liability insurance. Please contact tommie.calfee@atcmhmr.com for more information about this wonderful and fun volunteer activity.
