Love hands-on lessons? Love teaching creatively? Citizen Schools offers a one-of-a-kind teaching opportunity in underprivileged Austin middle schools. During weekly, 90-minute classes (called apprenticeships) Citizen Schools volunteers share their talents and interests with a group of middle school students and develop a creative project to be showcased at the end of the ten-week program. Apprenticeships are designed around the talents and passions of our volunteer teachers. Are you interested in computers and technology? Lead students in an apprenticeship that teaches them to design web pages! Love gardening? Work with students to redesign the landscaping at their school or to plan a sustainable food garden. Most recently, we had volunteers lead apprenticeships in Robotics, Healthy Cooking, Japanese and Yoga. In this coming semester, we're looking for a whole new range of apprenticeships--but of particular interest are urban design, video game design, football and rock-climbing. This is a great opportunity to teach high-quality, creative classes and to connect with local Austin youth. Desired Qualities: We’re looking for volunteers who are passionate about education, knowledgeable in their subject area, and dedicated to setting high expectations for students. Days and Times: Apprenticeships take place once a week in the afternoon, from approximately 4:30-6:00pm, starting in mid-September and ending in early December. Citizen Schools offers unique volunteer training and support throughout the semester. Register now for a chance to be a part of this unique education opportunity. http://www.citizenschools.org/volunteer/index.cfm
