The Texas After Violence Project seeks to understand the effects of the death penalty in Texas through qualitative research, especially listening to the first-person narratives of people who have lost loved ones to murder or to state executions.

Interns and volunteers support the Texas After Violence Project in preparing for, conducting, and processing oral history interviews with people directly affected by serious violence, especially murder; the subsequent investigative and legal processes; incarceration; the death penalty; or any combination of these events and processes.

An intern will participate in 3-6 hours of training per week during most of the internship, AND perform some or all of the following duties, depending on her or his interests & skills.

  • Identify potential oral history narrators;
  • Conduct qualitative research: legal, historical, or ethnographic;
  • Help us map the death penalty in Texas;
  • Assist in setting up and preparing for interviews;
  • Videotape interviews;
  • Process the interviews from camera to DVD;
  • Transcribe oral histories; proofread transcripts;
  • Follow up with interview narrators regarding corrections to transcript and donation of interview materials;
  • Where narrators agree to publication, post interviews online;
  • Special projects as mutually negotiated to meet your interests and project needs. Please see website, http://www.texasafterviolence.org, for more information.
