Compañeros en Lectura brings volunteers into Spanish-bilingual classrooms once a week for 45 minutes to help 2nd graders become stronger and more successful readers. Our program follows a volunteer model where:
- the entire class participates at the same time
- the teacher is in the classroom during the session for support
- 3-4 children reading on the same level are paired with the same volunteer every week
- structured materials are used by the children and volunteers
- all communication and materials are in Spanish
Structured materials guide volunteers and students through 3 types of activities:
- vocabulary
- comprehension
- fluency.
Volunteer opportunities are available at times and locations throughout Austin ISD at various Title 1 schools. We know we can find a time and location that will work with your schedule! Requirements: Volunteers must be fluent in Spanish and have the ability to commit to serving for 45 minutes each week from October 2009 through early May 2010 (about 24 45-minute sessions).
