You may ask, “Why should I consider being a hospice volunteer?” This is a good question and there are equally good answers. Being a hospice volunteers gives you the following:
- A way to give back and serve others.
- The chance to help those who are isolated by their illness.
- The opportunity to impact another persons life.
- The opportunity for personal growth and insight.
- And last but not least, consider the following statement from Leo Buscaglia…
“We never become more visible or meaningful than when we help someone. What we do, after all, is a tangible statement about who we are, what we value and how we feel about ourselves and our world. It’s a well-worn adage, but nonetheless true, that ‘love isn’t love until it’s given away.’ Until it’s manifested through some caring act, love is nothing more than a very good idea, only an idea, a simple word, a motion in the abstract…
Key characteristics of a hospice volunteer would be someone who is self-motivated, empathetic, warm, good listener, flexible, dependable, a team player, and compassionate. There are three broad avenues of volunteering: 1)Community Outreach 2)Office or 3)Direct patient/family contact. Training for community outreach opportunities and office assistance is 3 hours. Direct patient/family contact requires 8 hours of training. The Volunteer decides when and how often to volunteer, therefore there is a flexibility perfect for a student's schedule.
