The Central Utah Center for Independent Living is a non-profit organization assisting individuals with disabilities in Utah, Wasatch, Juab and Sanpete Counties. The Center, established in 2000 promotes the core services of Information and Referral, Advocacy, Independent Living Skills, and Peer Support. In addition to the core services additional services such as equipment loan banks, assistive technology, community integration support, and life skill classes are available to consumers. Independent living centers throughout the State of Utah support the philosophy that people with disabilities have the right to choose to live an integrated lifestyle in the least restrictive environment possible including where they live, work and play. The Central Utah Center for Independent Living (CUCIL) has an opening for a community service intern-field surveyor. This is an unpaid position and would be of interest to individuals who desire to serve the public and specifically individuals with disabilities. Preference will be given to candidates who are students majoring in the fields of sociology, psychology, disability studies, education, special education, or any other related course of study. Interns will learn and embrace all facets of the independent living philosophy while working at CUCIL. They will interact with consumers served by CUCIL, and they will gain an understanding of the unique challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in a variety of areas including but not limited to housing, employment, discrimination issues, transportation, etc. Interns will gain knowledge and understanding that will assist them during their education but also in their chosen careers. CUCIL has a consumer database which holds housing and transportation information for our consumers. This position involves going to the different housing complexes and checking the apartments for their accessibility; therefore, preference will be given to candidates who have a general working knowledge of data gathering, how survey completion works, and have experience with Microsoft Access. The intern will perform a variety of tasks which may include but not be limited to: o Helping the database manager locate rental properties for independent living for persons with disabilities. o Contacting the correct people and setting up appointments to inspect the rental properties to determine whether or not they meet the standards outlined in the Americans with Disabilities Act and CUCIL housing inspection criteria. o Entering the data into the center’s database program under the direction of the Database manager and Center Director. o Serving on committees or assist with various committees currently organized. o Recruiting volunteers for special events and projects.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Training will be provided before surveys begin. This opportunity is sponsored by: Central Utah Center for Independent Living
