Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 2, 2009

Without Meals-on-Wheels and a devoted family, 90-year-old Russell S. would not be living in his own home. Russell is wheelchair bound and dependent upon family for his physical needs. “I am blessed beyond measure for all the good deeds people show me every day,” Russell said.
Meals-on-Wheels volunteers provide Russell with a hot lunch. “I have one complaint,” Russell said. “They bring too much good food.”

Community members in Pleasant Grove bring Russell a weekday lunch, check to make sure he is safe, and spend a moment talking. “The meals are great, but the volunteers who deliver the meals make my day. Most bring their children and I show them my woodcarvings,” Russell said.

Each Sunday evening, Russell’s family meets to assign his weekly care. I have four children, 21 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren, Russell said. “They take turns getting me up, giving me breakfast and taking care of my worn-out parts.”
Staying in his own home is invaluable to Russell. He lives in the same house where he and his wife Doris raised their children. The home, one of the oldest in Utah County, was built in 1896. Russell lives in an apartment addition in the back so his children can look out for him. “Without Meals-on-Wheels and my family, I would have to live in an assisted living center,” Russell said. “I promised the house to my only daughter, Patricia, when I die, but I just won’t die,” Russell jokes.

Meals-on-Wheels nourish both my body and my spirit. I can never thank you enough for the moments of companionship the volunteers give me with each meal, Russell said.

Volunteers must be over age 18, hold a valid driver's license, and provide their own transportation.
Volunteers must pass a background check through the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI).
