Therapeutic Horseback Riding and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on November 4, 2009

Erika loves life, just like the other kids ...
She loves to play - just like the other kids.
She has dreams - just like the other kids.
Unlike the other kids, however, she can't play ball, she can't skate, and she can't ride a bicycle. But what she can do, thanks to Courage Reins, is ride a horse - just like other kids.

Our mission at Courage Reins is to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. Through therapeutic horseback riding activities, we provide a safe, fun and challenging setting for physical, cognitive, social and emotional growth.

The majority of our volunteers express an interest in helping care for the horses and assisting during lessons. You can come to our facility with absolutely no experience with horses or people with disabilities and within a few short sessions you will find yourself proficient with both through the completion of our certification program. We do, however, offer other volunteer assignments to match almost any skill level or interest. We accept any volunteers who can contribute to our mission.

Volunteers of all ages are welcomed. Those under 12 years of age, however, will need to be accompanied and supervised by an adult. This is a great service site for home school participants, youth church groups, families and retirees. We have special need for people during the daytime school hours. You would be helping with such groups as the Utah School for the Deaf & Blind, local school district's special needs children and the residents of a long-term care center of disabled children.

Please visit us on our Website, www.couragereins.org to catch the excitement and energy of what we are all about. Hope to see you soon!

Horses, People, and Myself

I learned to appreciate the beauty and grace of a horse. I learned to work with the horse and student. I had the opportunity to work with people and make new friends. In addition to learning about horses and various disabilities, I learned more about myself.
