We have over 150 volunteers each semester. These include people who provide church services, tutors for school, law students who help Detention Youth to understand the court system, and groups that come in and do activities with the youth for fun and to help them develop social skills, as well as many others.
We feel very fortunate to work in a community with so many willing volunteers and have benefited from having two large universities with great students who want to give back. Our youth love to have the volunteers come in as this is one of the times that they can relax and just be teenagers. This gives them the opportunity to interact with members of the community in a positive way, develop social skills and see that members of the community care about them as individuals. Many of our volunteers are great examples to our youth of the benefits that come from making positive choices and working hard on their goals.
In my mind every time a youth has the opportunity to interact with a volunteer has its own success story. As you see youth who are shy, learn to communicate or the loner participate in a group activity or the youth who has difficulty managing their behavior, smile and act politely. Volunteers add so much to our facility and to the experience of our youth while they are here and we are truly grateful for their service. I hope that they gain as much from the experience as our youth do. |
