A Dentist's Dedication To The Community

Dr. Albert Clark couldn’t be farther from the stereotype of the sadistic dentist with an itchy drill finger.

Known for his quiet and gentle demeanor, Dr. Clark has surprised many with the tender care he has provided for his patients over the span of numerous years. Many would also be surprised to learn how much of his dental services are done completely for free.

For more than four years, Clark has volunteered with Community Health Connect, an organization that pairs low-income, uninsured patients with health care professionals who donate appointments and services.

“Dr. Clark has truly taken to heart his commitment to serve his community to the best of his ability,” said Starr Stratford, a coordinator for Community Health Connect. “Despite serving his community for most of his 32 year career, most people don’t know the extent of his dedicated service. He is a very humble man who quietly goes about his work without thought of recognition.”

Before starting his practice in Provo, Clark provided dental services on a Navajo Indian Reservation for more than nine years with his wife and five children. Since then he has created a practice in Utah County with 10 staff members and an associate dentist who all share Clark’s dedication and passion for providing service and volunteer work in the community.

“He has gotten a lot of his colleagues excited about serving locally,” Stratford said. “The example and precedent of community service that he has set for other dentists in the area is invaluable.”

Through Community Health Connect, Clark has donated more than $40,000 worth of dental services to those who would otherwise not be able to afford it. Besides his Community Health Connect donations, Clark has also given an additional $60,000 of his own dental services over the past eight years.

Clark also worked hard to promote the American Dental Association sponsored event “Give Kids a Smile,” Stratford said. As chairman of the program in Utah County, Clark recruited dentists, hygienists and other volunteers to help provide dental care for deprived children. Clark also found suppliers to donate all of the equipment needed to treat the patients. This year’s event treated 35 children and more than $19,000 worth of work was performed.

Another portion of Clark’s time goes to help Medallion Manor, a small, intermediate care facility that specializes in the care of the mentally and developmentally disabled. Clark and his staff do all of the dental work for Medallion Manor’s clients free of charge.

“Many residents of Utah County go without dental care,” Stratford said. “Even though you can put a dollar amount on the services Dr. Clark performs, the example he provides is priceless.”

Clark has vowed to continue his service with Community Health Connect, “Give Kids a Smile” and Medallion Manor for many years to come

“I enjoy serving, and I love helping people,” Clark said. “I got into this profession for that very reason, and it’s been my focus throughout my career.”

Community Health Connect is always in need of dentists and doctors to volunteer their time and services to their program. It is also in need of office volunteers and interpreters to facilitate the efforts of the health care providers already serving the community. To volunteer in this capacity, contact Community Health Connect by calling 818-3015 or visiting www.communityhealthconnect.org. For other service opportunities, call United Way at 2-1-1.
