The Town of Fairhaven formally established the Fairhaven Council on Aging at the Town Meeting of Fairhaven, Massachusetts on March 31, 1966 implementing Chapter 40 Section 8B of the Massachusetts General Laws. Historically, the Town Annual Report of 1972 is the next reference to the Council on Aging [COA] establishing the Fairhaven Boys Club as a Drop-in Center on November 1971. In 1972, the Fairhaven Council on Aging received a donation for a forty-four passenger senior bus, used to transport Fairhaven elders on senior trips. In 1974, The Council on Aging started using the Wood and Oxford Elementary Schools for noon meals. In 1976 the program was moved to the Sconticut Neck Improvement Association Building. As recognition for the need of senior services grew, in 1979 Fairhaven Selectmen accepted this 3,580 square foot building for the Senior Drop-in Center. In 1999, The Town of Fairhaven sought Community Development Block Grant funding to build a new Senior Center / Recreation Center. Upon completion in December 2001, the Fairhaven Council on Aging moved to it current 5,457 square foot facility, located at 229 Huttleston Avenue (Route 6) in Fairhaven.
