NAMI Charlotte County is a grassroots non profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by mental illness and their families through education, support, and advocacy and to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness.
Description:
NAMI Charlotte County holds monthly meetings to discuss concerns related to those suffering from mental illness in our community. We have a monthly support group for caregivers. We offer education programs designed for family members/caregivers, mental health consumers, teachers/school staff, law enforcement, and social service/mental health providers to help provide understanding of brain disorders, build empathy, and develop coping skills needed to live and work with persons suffering from mental illness. NAMI Charlotte sponsors community events related to mental health awareness and participates in many community committees and councils.
History:
This local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness was established in April 2006 to address and advocate for the unmet needs of those suffering from mental illness in the Charlotte County community. We have held monthly meetings and support groups, graduated over 50 people from our Family to Family Class We have developed partnerships with many agencies in the Charlotte County area including several United Way member agencies. We are registered with NAMI Florida and NAMI National and have obtained our 501 (c) 3 status.
