The Dallas Lighthouse

Agency Details:

The Dallas Lighthouse

The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides training, employment, and rehabilitative services that encourage opportunities for personal responsibility, economic independence, and social development for North Texans who are blind or visually impaired.

Description:
The Dallas Lighthouse is unique in that we have both a fully vertically integrated manufacturing/industrial/sewing center and a community outreach program to serve the blind and visually impaired individuals in the greater Dallas area. We are the largest employer of the blind and severely visually impaired in North Texas.

History:
The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind is the oldest Lighthouse for the Blind in the state of Texas. It was founded in Dallas by Eva Cameron in 1931, a blind woman who devoted her life to encouraging and training others who were visually impaired or blind. Since its original dedication in 1976, the Dallas Lighthouse has been located at 4245 Office Parkway, near Haskell and Interstate 75, on the north side of the Downtown Metropolitan Area Our philosophy is that all people should have the opportunity to become responsible, productive members of society, regardless of their sight ability. With that in mind, throughout its history, the Lighthouse has provided skills training and employment, as well as social and educational experiences/opportunities for blind and visually impaired individuals.
