UCAN

Agency Details:

UCAN

To transform the community and lives of those affected by abuse through support, awareness, education and involvement.

Description:
The UCAN committee works closely with Someplace Safe and WINGS Family Supportive Services to provide support for victims of domestic violence and to provide education and support to families.

History:
UCAN has its roots in the Healthy Community Healthy Youth Initiative that operated in Douglas County for a number of years. In 2000 we had our first "peace luncheon" and invited 100 men to come and see what they could do to help reduce violence in our community. We handed out awareness booklets at men's and women's health awreness fairs and also hosted an annual Domestic Abuse Awareness luncheon in October from 2000 to present. We have had an average of 200 community members attend the annual luncheons. In 2005, our "Peace Committee" renamed itself and became the United Communities Advocating Non-Violence Inc (UCAN).
