Logo

The mission of La Casa de las Madres is to respond to calls for help from domestic violence victims, of all ages, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We give survivors the tools to transform their lives. We seek to prevent future violence by educating the community and by redefining public perceptions about domestic violence.

Description:
La Casa offers emergency residential shelter and community-based services to women, teens and their children while providing advocacy, counseling, family-based services and referrals. Our Mission Street office houses our two 24 hour crisis phone lines, Drop-In Counseling Center, Teen Program, and Community Education and Outreach Program, while off-site we run the Emergency Shelter, San Francisco Police Department Domestic Violence Response Unit Advocacy Program, Safe Havens Project, Mary Elizabeth Inn Case Management Program, and Safe Housing Project.

History:
Our History and Mission
In 1976, a dynamic group of Bay Area women gathered to found La Casa de las Madres, California’s first and the nation’s second shelter dedicated to women and children escaping domestic violence. They chose our name—The Home of the Mothers—because the arms of a mother represent the unconditional acceptance, nurturing and safety one seeks in a time of crisis or to heal from trauma. They also meant to honor the memory of one of their mothers, a woman brutally murdered by her partner.
