Jamaica Plain Regan Youth League
The purpose of the Regan Youth League is to provide the children of Jamaica Plain with the opportunity to play organized baseball in an open, safe, and friendly environment. The League aspires to foster the discipline and fun that are part of learning a challenging team sport, to encourage a spirit of community among participants from diverse backgrounds who practice and play together, and to promote good sportsmanship and respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, umpires, and the great game of baseball.
Description:
There are six divisions In the Regan Youth League: -- T-ball, for 6-year-olds. Players hit a soft squishy ball off a tee. The goal is to learn the basic rules of baseball; everyone gets to bat each inning; there are no winning or losing teams. -- Farm Division, for 7- and 8-year-olds. Players play real baseball with a somewhat softer ball; coaches pitch. -- Junior Division, for 9- and 10-year-olds. Players learn to pitch and hone other baseball skills. -- Senior Division (akin to Little League), for 11- and 12-year-olds. -- Pony Division, for 13- to 15-year-olds. The most competitive division; games are played on a full-size baseball diamond and employ more sophisticated rules such as running on dropped third strikes and leading off bases. -- Softball Division, for girls 8-13. (Girls are welcome and encouraged to play baseball; many prefer athletic competition with other girls.) Three levels, with progressive skills.
History:
The Regan Youth League was founded in 1967 in the Hyde Square neighborhood of Jamaica Plain with a few teams. It has grown to over 650 players on 48 teams, and draws players from Roslindale, Dorchester, Mission Hill, and other Boston neighborhoods besides Jamaica Plain.
